Tucked away in the latest Nintendo Direct was a new cross-platform Gundam action game called SD Gundam Battle Alliance, and it looks entirely adorable.
The SD Gundam lineage is a long and storied one. Starting back in the 80s, it took the serious Mobile Suit Gundam and turned it into something cute instead. With “SD” being short for “super deformed”, it treated the mecha and characters as compressed and cuter variants.
Naturally, there were a bunch of SD Gundam games made over the years, even spawning the tactical role-playing game series SD Gundam G Generation in the process.
There were a few action related games too though and its this that SD Gundam Battle Alliance is trying to resurrect.
Using Unreal Engine 4, SD Gundam Battle Alliance looks to be a bit like the Gundam Breaker games, without the model kit customization aspect. In fact, I get a distinct vibe of SD Gundam Gashapon Wars here, which was a great little action game on the GameCube from 2005.
Admittedly SD Gundam Battle Alliance has lower angled camera setup, but the general functional sentiment feels very similar.
Anyway, it looks like SD Gundam Battle Alliance will be released sometime later this year and on pretty much every major gaming platform there is. I will likely be picking up the Switch version, as a nod to Gashapon Wars, but until then I hope this turns out as good as I hope it will be.
