AUGUSTA, Ga. — Halfway through the 2022 Masters, it’s becoming increasingly clear that this tournament is shaping up to potentially be a great one. And while treacherous conditions and gusty winds have not allowed for many low scores thus far, the top of the leaderboard as we head into Moving Day on Saturday is nonetheless already giving us big names.
None quite as big than the World No. 1 in Scottie Scheffler, who on Friday tied the low round of the week with a 5-under 67 to take control of the tournament. Scheffler’s big day propelled him to a five-stroke lead — tied for the largest in Masters history through 36 holes — but it sure doesn’t feel like it’s a wrap at Augusta NATIONAL. In the hunt includes a number of major champions like Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama and others who are plenty capable of chasing down the big lead.
Will Scheffler finish it off from here and capture his first major championship with a green jacket? That’s the big question, and with so many stars lurking in the shadows it makes for a compelling weekend of competition at one of the sport’s best and most prominent venues.

Tiger’s four-putt drops him outside the top 35
Rick Gehman and I were just one CBS Sports HQ and he made a great point about Tiger’s four-putt on the 5th hole: it was a mental mistake, and we rarely see mental mistakes from him especially at Augusta. After missing the second putt Woods immediately tried to hit the next putt, did not mark the ball or reset his stance. A two-footer that should certainly have been an easy knock in maybe needed a little more attention, and now it’s cost him a huge stroke on a tight leaderboard.

Viktor Hovland one of the lone movers on moving day
Viktor Hovland may not be in a position to win heading into Sunday, but he’s given himself a shot to record his best Masters finish in three starts thanks some stellar play here on Saturday. His T32 in 2019 awarded him the honor of low amateur and then he bested that finish with a T21 in 2021. Thanks to four birdies in his last seven holes, Hovland is one of a few players in red numbers for the day and he’s gotten up to T24 on the leaderboard.

The gait for Tiger is not looking great thus far. He’s using his driver as a cane and hobbling around the National. Doesn’t mean he won’t put a score together, but the weather for it today doesn’t seem great for him.

Scoring conditions remain tough
At this moment, no one on the course is better than -1 for the day as we see more of the same challenges continue from Friday’s high scores. It’s cold, windy and firm on the greens so if you happen to misjudge an approach or have a chip shot land wrong it’s going to scoot by the hole. Only Viktor Hovland’s birdie flurry around the turn (he’s -1 thru 12, +3 for the championship) has given evidence that there are scores out there today, but even he’s taken some lumps with three bogeys as well.
