AUGUSTA, Ga. — After a long, often chaotic first part of the week, the 86th Masters gets underway today with as much anticipation as one can remember a major championship carrying. Much of that obviously revolves around Tiger Woods teeing it up for the first time since his horrific car accident in February 2021, and he’s taken almost all of the oxygen out of August National for the last three days. However, there are plenty of other storylines that will begin to unfold starting Thursday morning.

Chief among those is Rory McIlroy’s bid for his first Masters and the elusive career grand slam. Asked about this Wednesday, his answer was tremendous:”I love Augusta National. I love the Masters. I’ve had wonderful times here and not so wonderful times. But I keep coming back every year, and I’ll keep coming back as long as they’ll let me.” That’s how many people feel about the Masters, and it’s likely that one more name — perhaps Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas or McIlroy himself — will this year be added to the list of folks who will be able to keep coming back forever.

Watch the 2022 Masters streaming now with Masters Live as we follow the best golfers in the world throughout Augusta National with Featured Groups, check in at the famed Amen Corner and see leaders round the turn on Holes 15 & 16. Watch live for free on desktop and mobile via CBSSports.com and CBS Sports App. Also available on Paramount+.

CBS Sports will update this story with scores and highlights from the Masters below. Check out the live scores at the top of this story, a more detailed leaderboard, Round 1 tee times and our complete Masters TV schedule / coverage guide.

We’re only a few hours into the 2022 Masters, but the top of the leaderboard is starting to shape up here in Round 1. Here’s a look at where things stand as of now with leader Joaquin Niemann just wrapping up his first nine.

1. Joaquin Niemann (-3)

Full-on implosion today for Matthew Wolff. He’s 7 over through 11. Snapped a club early. Tried, unsuccessfully, putting out of a bunker. Smacked a ball with his putter into the water. Then just came up well short of the 12th green and into Ray’s Creek. Stunning for one of the sport’s young stars.

Collin Morikawa looking to make history

25-year-old Collin Morikawa this week, who tees off today at 2:00 p.m. ET, is looking to win his third career major championship after wins at the PGA Championship (2020) and at The Open Championship (2021). Only four golfers have accomplished that feat, and the four are elite company to keep:

  • Jack Nicklaus
  • Tiger Woods
  • Rory McIlroy
  • Jordan Spieth

Morikawa was First-Team All-Press Conference this week, too. Quiet confidence exuding from him. At 20-1, he’s my favorite pick to win it this week.

“I was telling Nick here that on 9 it was everything I could have asked for to kind of finish off a practice round,” he said Wednesday of his final practice round. “It clicked on the last hole, which is good. Everything felt good, but it was just that one little extra thought that got me to kind of focus up a little bit more and get ready for tomorrow.”

JOAQUIN NIEMANN! The 23-year-old drops one in the bucket from 105 yards out on the par-4 ninth for eagle to take the solo lead at the Masters as he makes the turn. After a bogey on the first, he played the final eight holes on the first nine at 4-under.

Tiger also looking like he’s lacking some of the pop he had even as recently as 2019. As Colt Knost pointed out on the broadcast, this might actually benefit him if he’s able to control the ball better off the tee and use his all-time iron game to score.

Tiger’s up and down on No. 7 was unbelievable. He’s playing his way into the round now and has a real chance to go out in 34 with a birdie on No. 8 and a par on No. 9.

Tiger seems to be waving at it off the tee more than I would have thought. That swing on No. 7 looked pretty wipey and it ends up in the second cut way out to the right.

Tiger Woods’ strong start continues

After a safe par-par-par-par-par start to Round 1 at the Masters, Tiger Woods is in the red at Augusta National with a birdie on the par-3 sixth. Had a brilliant shot into the green that nearly dropped and rewarded himself with a tap-in birdie. Puts him T3 on the leaderboard right now, which is just one stroke off leaders Talor Gooch and Harry Higgs.
